What We Did On Our Holiday

Lionsgate UK have picked up the cinematic distribution rights to six new movie titles ahead of the Cannes Film Festival. Among them is What We Did On Our Holiday, for which, according to the press release, David Tennant appears to have signed.

What We Did on Our Holiday starts shooting on June 17 and is a British family comedy written and directed by the creators of the BBC hit comedy ‘Outnumbered’, Guy Jenkin and Andy Hamilton. It stars Billy Connolly, Rosamund Pike, David Tennant and Ben Miller. The film is produced by David M Thompson (Billy Elliot, An Education) alongside Dan Winch in his first producer role.


BBC Films say that they will confirm casting for What We Did On Our Holiday very soon.

Film sales, marketing and distribution company Independent have taken the new David Tennant film What We Did On Our Holiday onto the international market at Cannes. The film is currently in pre-production with shooting due to start in Scotland on the 17th June. David stars with Rosamund Pike as Doug and Abi, a couple going through a divorce who make a tense trip to Scotland for a family celebration

Twenty Twelve star Amelia Bullmore is the latest addition to the cast which also includes Billy Connolly, Ben Miller and young actors Harriet Turnbull, Bobby Smalldridge and Emilia Jones, who was recently seen as Merry in Doctor Who - The Rings Of Akhaten.

Synopsis

Doug and Abi are taking their three children on a trip to Scotland for a big family gathering. They are in the midst of a difficult divorce, and have asked the kids to keep it a secret from their extended family. But as the inevitable feuds kick in, a completely unexpected turn of events involving the children causes further tensions to rise to the surface. And with the repercussions that ensue - hilarious and emotional in equal measure - the family are forced to put aside their differences and work together or else risk losing what they hold most dear.

Produced by David M Thompson and Dan Winch for Origin Pictures and BBC Films with backing from Creative Scotland. Lionsgate will handle UK distribution.


Independent’s Andrew Orr said: “This is the funniest script that has come out of the UK in years. It is both edgy and commercial and will appeal to anyone who has ever felt like laughing and crying during a tense family gathering.”

BBC Films have at last posted confirmation that they will be behind What We Did On Our Holiday the new comedy film starring David Tennant and Rosamund Pike which begins shooting next month

The film follows divorcing couple Doug and Abi (David Tennant and Rosamund Pike) and their three children on a chaotic trip to Scotland for a family birthday. Other cast members are believed to include Ben Miller and Amelia Bullmore along with young actors Harriet Turnbull, Bobby Smalldridge and Emilia Jones, who will be playing the couple's three children.

Scottish Newspaper The Herald have published some more filming photos of David Tennant and Rosamund Pike filming their first scenes for the new BBC Films comedy feature What We Did On Our Holiday. The production was based around a terraced house in Glasgow yesterday as the stars filmed scenes involving them loading up a family car with luggage and toys.

David and Rosamund play Doug and Abi, a couple on the verge of divorce who make a trip to Scotland with their three children for a family birthday celebration. The film is written and directed by Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin, creators of Outnumbered, and the film will employ the same semi-improvisational techniques as the popular BBC comedy.

Other cast include Billy Connolly as grandfather Gordie, with Ben Miller, Amelia Bullmore and Celia Imrie and Emilia Jones, Harriet Turnbull and Bobby Smalldridge as the couple's three children.

What We Did On Our Holiday will shoot on location in Glasgow and across Scotland until 3rd August and is scheduled for a 2014 release. The film is a co-production between BBC Films and Origin Pictures with funding input from Creative Scotland.

Dan Winch, the producer of What We Did On Our Holiday, has been talking to the Clydebank Post about the choice of locations for the movie. The BBC Films and Origin Pictures co-production, starring David Tennant and Rosamund Pike, is being shot on location in Scotland with a number of scenes filmed in the Scotstoun district of Glasgow, which has, the producer says, a unique visual impact. He said

"What I think is good about that area is the variety of architecture. You can go from one street to the next and imagine you're in a different city. It doesn't necessarily tie you to Glasgow.

"We filmed streets in a bit more of an urban setting. We were looking for somewhere which looks as if it's in the south of England. That's why we came to that part of town because the architecture is quite hard to pin point where it's from. Unless you're living in the street or are round the corner from the street you probably wouldn't know you weren't in London.


"We searched high and low for a house that felt like it was in the right part of Scotland. We'll be at this location for another couple of weeks. We are at a private house that appears in the film. We went up to a few options, we saw many different houses all offering different things but we settled on this one."

He also spoke a little about the plot.

"It starts in London, it's a family going to visit the other half of the family up in Scotland," he said, "We follow the journey from London with all the things we can relate to when going on a family holiday, packing up the car, and 'are we nearly there yet?' with kids in the car, that type of thing.

"We are filming for the next five weeks. One of our biggest challenges is working with the restrictions of working with children, especially when they're the driving factor behind the story. It's geared round them.”

Finally Dan had great things to say about filming in Scotland.

“Everybody in Scotland has been so welcoming, we've had terrific support. We couldn't have completed the film if we hadn't had the support." he said.

Doug e Abi stanno portando i loro tre figli in un viaggio in Scozia per una grande riunione di famiglia. Sono nel bel mezzo di un divorzio difficile, e hanno chiesto ai ragazzi di mantenere il segreto alla loro famiglia allargata. Ma, inevitabili completamente inaspettati eventi coinvolgono i bambini provocando ulteriori tensioni a salire in superficie. E con le ripercussioni che ne conseguono - esilarante ed emotivo in egual misura - la famiglia è costretti a mettere da parte le loro differenze e lavorare insieme, altrimenti il rischio di perdere ciò che hanno di più caro.

David dice che Doug è un personaggio gratificante da interpretare.
Ora che sono divisi, Abi, essendo il più insieme dei due, è andata via e ha una nuova vita e un nuovo capo, mentre Doug la sta affrontando meno bene. Egli è sguazza un po 'nella sua miseria.

Aggiunge inoltre:
Hanno una pugnalata alla unità per il bene del padre di Doug, che ama molto Abi, e vuole vederla più della maggior parte delle persone che sono invitati alla sua festa del 75° compleanno. Visto che non sta bene, decidono di mantenere la loro separazione un segreto e sforzarsi un pò sulle cose, per non dire altro.

Rosamund Pike descrive il film What We Did On Our Holiday
... un film dove ci sono un sacco di comportamenti infantile- e nonsempre dai bambini. Gli adulti si comportano in modo molto immaturo per gran parte di essa.
Lei dice che Doug e Abi le loro liti furiose sono molto divertenti.
E' come uno show-muto, a volte. Ci sono vari scatti che Andy e Guy compongono, uno di noi sotto la pioggia e non si può davvero sentire quello che stiamo dicendo, ma solo a guardare i pugni jabbing e la gesticolazione vi mostra quanto sia assurdo che siamo.
E aggiunge che c'è un lato feroce in Abi, soprattutto quando i suoi figli sono interessati, che viene fuori sopratutto quando l'assistente sociale Agnes Chisholm si presenta.
Quando questa donna, interpretata da Celia Imrie, arriva sulla scena e sembra volontariamente a cercare un significato oscuro sotto fatti abbastanza innocenti, Abi trova la sua incredibilmente minaccioso, dice, "ed è piuttosto scortese con lei. Il suo lato animale che si avvicina a una tigre viene fuori.

Tuttavia, Abi è ancora in grado di riconoscere che, nonostante le loro difficoltà, lei e Doug hanno ancora un rapporto profondo.
Loro non stanno ottenendo di nuovo insieme, ma lui è il padre dei suoi figli, indipendentemente dalle loro differenze personali, e lei ha la grazia di ammettere alla fine che lui è molto buono e amorevole padre.
